Does Oyakodon taste good?
It is a rice bowl dish that uses both the chicken and the egg as toppings. In fact, the word “Oyakodon” means “parent and child”. This broth is flavored with a balanced mixture of soy sauce and sugar, so it tastes sweet and salty. It was one of my favorite meals to eat in Japan as it is fast, healthy and delicious.
What is donburi sauce?
A typical sauce might consist of dashi (stock broth) flavored with soy sauce and mirin (rice wine). Proportions vary, but there is normally three to four times as much dashi as soy sauce and mirin. For oyakodon, Tsuji (1980) recommends dashi flavored with light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, and sugar.

The broth is then thickened by the egg and when poured over the rice, it’s not overly soupy with just the right amount of eggy gravy that flow through and coat the rice grains with the gravy. It’s just heavenly. Top with a raw egg yolk for a creamier and richer mouthfeel.
Why is it called Oyakodon?
“Oya” means parent, “ko” means child and “don” is short for donburi which is a rice bowl. The name of the dish is a poetic reflection of the fact that chicken and egg are served over rice.
